French Knight continuing article
FIM 10
When starting to paint the shield I followed a process much similar to the one used when painting the vest and the knights banner. In this case, due to the flat surface it was much easier. Beside all of this, one has to have a clear idea of where to put the shield according to the light and shadows given to the figure. |

Shield’s colour base.

Here I applied the first shield’s lights based on the figure and the shield’s final position.

Shadows and last lights.

Once again, I use a mask in order to get a fase and symmetrical drawing, at the end a fine yellow coat was applied with an airbrush.
|

You can se here the result when taking off the masking. As you may notice using such method we do not have to retouch much the painting surface, it makes the work much easier when painting symmetrical motifs.

Applying lights and shadows to heraldry.
|

When getting to this point I had to detail the coats. It is recommended to have a very dilute colour, we do not want to excessively mark the drawing, and we need the brush to be clean and fluid. I later added the cuts effect on the shield; we can do that by making a very fine bright fine line parallel to another one of the same colour but much darker.

The last effect was to add wear and mud spots along with blood and dust. To get this a series of washings were applied mixing some Black, Blue and Dark Brown in the shadows in order to get them more intense.
